Sophie in the Hat Shop

Project: Illustrations for "Howl's Moving House" written by Diana Wynne Jones
Book Illustration Competition. The Folio Society in collaboration with House of Illustrations
The story is full of adventures, magic, friendship, love and humour — perfect mix for a teenage audience, especially girls.
Year 2018

Pencil, ink, gouache, collage and digital assembly

To empahasize Sophies uneasiness and diffidence I used high viewpoint. Dark shapes around her — the hats — are used to create pressure. Also they remind me of pecking crows. Colour palette is dull, a bit lifeless, only Sophie's bright hair and her green threar (her magic) enliven the picture

Colour palette and texture selected to convey the feeling of marshes at night. Contrast between youth and old age (Micheal and Sophie) created by pencil drawing. Sophie's stopping gesture oppsed to Michael's movement

By avoiding all unnecessary details I intended to create the feeling of "desolation", which is felt by sick Howl. I used some face features of Andre Agassi, who was considered as "an inspiration for Howl character" by the author
